While autologous bones contain osteoblasts and growth factors and are beneficial for bone regeneration, various bone graft materials have been developed to address limitations such as the limited amount of autologous bone available for harvesting and the physical burden on patients. Bone graft materials used in implant treatment include carbonate apatite, OCP/Collagen, low-crystalline HA/Collagen, and bovine derived HA. To achieve successful bone regeneration using these bone graft materials, it is essential to perform surgery with a thorough understanding of the categorization, material properties, and characteristics of the bone graft materials. In this context, I would like to discuss the key points and tips in selection of appropriate bone graft material for each specific clinical application.

To improve the predictability of implant treatment, it is crucial to place implants in positions that account for the planned prosthetic restoration and within the bone where there are no anatomical concerns. However, insufficient bone volume―often caused by post-extraction bone resorption or the presence of anatomical structures such as the maxillary sinus―is a common issue. Therefore, the application of bone augmentation using bone graft materials with appropriate compressive strength and porosity as a scaffold is highly beneficial. In this presentation, we will present and discuss bone augmentation techniques and their outcomes in cases of insufficient bone volume under various clinical conditions.

In 2017, a granular synthetic carbonate apatite graft material (product name: Cytrans Granules GC), one of the alloplastic bone graft materials, was introduced. Carbonate apatite granules contain a high level of carbonate (approximately 12%), making them readily resorbable by osteoclasts. Compared with other bone graft materials, carbonate apatite also promotes the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow stromal cells and osteoblasts more effectively. In this lecture, the speaker will present the mid-term clinical outcomes of implant therapy and discuss the clinical effectiveness of Cytrans Granules.
