Over a decade has passed since universal adhesives were introduced into clinical practice, during which time advances in cutting-edge technologies and optimization of adhesive compositions have enhanced their clinical performance. As a result, products regarded as next-generation universal adhesives have recently been developed. These advancements include shortening of application time, tolerance to moisture conditions, and application of universal adhesive technology as a primer in two-step universal adhesive systems and resin luting cements.
Recently, a novel universal adhesive, AFB-00 (GC), has been developed to allow omission air-blowing after adhesive application and to provide touch cure effect, in which chemical polymerization is initiated upon contact with a resin luting cement. Although these new technologies are expected to further enhance versatility and simplify clinical procedures, limited information is currently available regarding their bonding performance. In this presentation, I provide an overview of the characteristics of next-generation universal adhesives based on in vitro investigations and introduce the bonding performance of a novel universal adhesive, ABF-00. Furthermore, I present the clinical applications of next-generation universal adhesives in both direct and indirect restorations.
