Future Directions in Dental Materials:
From Bioactive Intelligence to Reinforced Structures and Advanced Technology

未来を創る歯科材料:
バイオアクティブインテリジェンス・バイオファンクショナル・先進技術の最前線

Dental materials are now evolving from “passive materials” to “functional materials.”
From “smart” bioactive materials that respond to intraoral conditions, to fiber-reinforced composites that expand clinical possibilities, and customized prosthetic devices enabled by generative AI—
this session will present how these cutting-edge technologies are redefining what will become the “future standard” of dentistry, through the latest scientific insights.

Designing future dental materials: Multi-functional “smart” bioactive materials and implementation of materials informatics approach

Designing future dental materials: Multi-functional “smart” bioactive materials and implementation of materials informatics approach

  • Bioactive materials
  • Smart materials
  • Caries prevention/management
  • Pulpal healing
  • Bone regeneration
  • Materials informatics
Recently, dental materials have been upgraded to the ones that exhibit bioactive functions based on chemical or/and biological actions. As highly advanced future materials, we are conducting the research to develop multi-functional “smart” bioactive materials, i.e. materials that intelligently demonstrate different bioactive functions on demand or multiple bioactive functions in sync with biological response. Those include materials that i) prevent/manage dental caries by exhibiting antibacterial or tooth-strengthening effects in response to symbiotic/dysbiotic conditions of biofilm and ii) promote pulpal healing or bone regeneration by step-by-step exhibition of inflammation-modulating effects and tissue-regeneration effects. In this presentation, our trials to develop such innovative materials using ion-release control technology are introduced. Additionally, materials informatics approach to effectively uncover optimum compositions to enable smart functions is addressed.

Fiber Reinforcement and Its Future in High-Performance Restorative Dentistry

Fiber Reinforcement and Its Future in High-Performance Restorative Dentistry

  • Why and where to use fibers?
  • Who benefits the most of fibers?
  • Elements for successful use of fibers
The digital dentistry has revolutionized the dental workflow but it's important to note that it hasn't changed the core principles of dental treatment. Conversely, the development of minimally invasive restorative dentistry has had a significant impact on dentistry, affecting treatment procedures. This transformation is largely attributed to advancements in materials and adhesive techniques. This lecture aims to provide insight into the potential and future of fiber reinforced composites in dentistry.

Generative AI for dental prostheses and devices

Generative AI for dental prostheses and devices

AI is now everywhere. Generative AI is transforming the design and application landscape of dental prostheses and devices. This presentation will explore the research, technology and development of generative AI models in creating accurate, customized dental restorations, prostheses and devices. We will also discuss how these models enable real-world rapid, data-driven generation of personalized solutions, enhance precision in design, and streamline the fabrication process. The talk will also address current challenges, ethical considerations, and prospects of integrating generative AI into clinical workflows to improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency in dentistry.
