This 90-minute session will explore the evolving role of dentistry in modern society and highlight the importance of both medical–dental and community-based collaboration. Through the experiences of two clinics actively engaged in these efforts, the speakers will share practical approaches, real-world challenges, and successful strategies developed in everyday clinical practice.

Traditionally, the primary focus of dental care was the treatment of dental caries, periodontal disease, and prosthetic rehabilitation. I recently learned that my family's dental clinic did not even require appointments in the past—a reflection of the overwhelming number of patients needing treatment for dental disease at that time. However, times have changed, and so too must our targets and approaches to intervention. We need to broaden our perspective beyond the oral cavity, expand the outcomes we aim to achieve, and think more freely about the role of dentistry. In this lecture, I hope we can explore together the future of dental care and consider the changes we should strive to achieve in the near future.

Dental care providers have the rare opportunity to be involved in a patient's life from before birth to after death. Realizing this potential requires incorporating oral function management into both home-visit and outpatient practice, with consistent, long-term support for patients' eating function. In my own work, I have contributed to building regional healthcare as Executive Director of the local Dental Association, and to community health promotion as chairperson of a local merchants' association. By sharing these experiences, I hope to offer each region a starting point for considering what can be done locally.

This lecture will explore practical approaches to oral care and nutritional support that can begin with something as simple as bringing a single toothbrush. Through clinical cases, participants will learn strategies for building effective relationships with families and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals, as well as practical perspectives for supporting patients within the community. The lecture aims to provide useful insights that can be readily applied in everyday clinical practice.
