From Diagnosis to Treatment Planning for Patients with Occlusal Collapse

When a patient presents with occlusal collapse caused by a combination of lifestyle, systemic, and oral health factors, where do you begin, and what treatment goals do you set?
This session will explore the thought process behind evaluating, diagnosing, and treatment planning for complex occlusal collapse cases, with a focus on determining the most appropriate treatment plan for each patient.
Using real clinical cases, leading clinicians from the SJCD, 5D, and Bio-Emulation study groups will share their approaches and clinical decision-making processes. Through discussion, participants will explore differences and commonalities in treatment planning, as well as the challenges that often arise when making clinical decisions.
An important session for both experienced clinicians and younger dentists seeking a deeper understanding of occlusal collapse cases.

Essential Requirements for Successful Treatment: Tailoring the Approach to Each Clinical Case

Understanding the characteristics of each clinical case
Re-evaluating prosthodontic treatment and the therapeutic occlusion
Assessing the appropriateness of the treatment plan

Although occlusion is fundamentally based on natural science, it is also guided by principles derived from the clinical observations of those who came before us. When reconstruction is indicated for patients with a collapsed dentition, treatment objectives are typically established to achieve an optimal condylar position, a stable intercuspal position, an appropriate occlusal vertical dimension, and proper anterior guidance. However, as with any set of clinical principles, exceptions do exist.
This lecture will focus on the diversity of anterior guidance and discuss how it should be interpreted in different clinical cases. By recognizing these variations and tailoring treatment to the individual patient, clinicians can establish the most appropriate occlusion for each case, ultimately contributing to more favorable long-term outcomes.

In recent years, advances in digital technology have dramatically changed prosthodontic techniques and clinical workflows. However, no matter how sophisticated the new "tactics" become, high-quality prosthodontic treatment cannot be achieved without a sound underlying "strategy." This lecture will review the transition from conventional clinical practice to modern digital workflows and discuss the fundamental principles of prosthodontic treatment that remain unchanged despite technological advances.

Minimally invasive approach for complex patients

How should teeth wear be assessed, and when should treatment be initiated?
How should the amount of tooth reduction be determined?
How should restorative materials be selected?

Recent advances in adhesive technology and the development of various high-strength restorative materials have made it possible to provide minimally invasive and esthetic treatment for damaged teeth and oral diseases. However, misunderstanding the concept of MI dentistry may lead to inappropriate treatment intervention or excessive tooth reduction, ultimately compromising patient outcomes. In this lecture, I will present my approach to MI treatment for patients with severe tooth wear, focusing on appropriate treatment intervention and clinical decision-making.
