The expanding clinical application of contemporary ceramic materials has significantly improved the balance between esthetics and durability compared with the era when PFM restorations were the standard of care. Material-driven approaches that rely on the inherent optical properties of ceramics have simplified shade reproduction, particularly in multiple-unit restorations, where reducing or eliminating porcelain layering can shorten fabrication time and improve reproducibility.
However, in cases requiring highly accurate reproduction of the color and surface characteristics of adjacent natural teeth, the fundamental principles and technical challenges of ceramic crown fabrication have changed little over the past two decades, despite advances in CAD/CAM technology and digital photography.
This lecture will review the essential principles for reproducing the appearance of natural teeth in ceramic restorations. Particular emphasis will be placed on selecting dentin porcelains based on chroma, understanding the optical changes that occur after applying translucent porcelains, and characterizing the dentin structure with internal stains while accounting for these changes. In addition, the application of digital image superimposition (virtual try-in) during crown fabrication will be presented as a practical tool for improving the predictability of esthetic outcomes.

In today's digital era, efficiency and reproducibility have become central to restorative dentistry. However, we must not lose sight of the craftsmanship, artistic sensitivity, and appreciation of natural beauty that arise from skilled handwork—the essence of the Japanese concept of *TAKUMI*. The ultimate goal of prosthodontic and restorative treatment has always been the faithful reproduction of natural dentition, a foundation built over decades by exceptional dental technicians. In particular, Japanese dental technicians have made remarkable contributions to the field of tooth morphology, earning worldwide recognition for their precision and artistry.
The morphology and intricate surface texture of natural teeth possess a level of refinement comparable to that found in traditional Japanese craftsmanship. Well-designed tooth morphology imparts vitality and realism to restorations, elevating restorative treatment beyond a technical procedure to a form of artistic expression. As contemporary dentistry has shifted toward minimally invasive, esthetic treatment, restorative materials have increasingly evolved from ceramics to composite resins. Consequently, the ability to reproduce natural tooth morphology is no longer the exclusive domain of dental technicians but has become an essential clinical skill for dentists as well.
This lecture will revisit the concepts of morphology and esthetics cultivated by Japanese clinicians and technicians through the lens of *TAKUMI*. From the perspective of a composite artist, practical clinical approaches for reproducing natural dentition with direct composite resin will be presented, demonstrating how timeless esthetic principles can be integrated into modern minimally invasive restorative dentistry.

Creating beautiful, healthy smiles based on the morphology of natural dentition is a fundamental objective of esthetic restorative dentistry. However, laminate veneer restorations demand both minimal invasiveness and exceptional esthetic outcomes, while the limited restorative thickness significantly restricts the available space for reproducing color and morphology. As a result, every 0.1 mm of ceramic thickness requires careful clinical and technical decision-making. In this lecture, I will present a treatment philosophy for smile design based on a modified clinical morphology concept derived from natural tooth anatomy. Through a series of clinical cases, the treatment workflow will be reviewed step by step, illustrating practical strategies for achieving predictable esthetic outcomes with minimally invasive veneer restorations.

Observation and reproduction of natural tooth surface texture: The science behind lifelike surface characterization

Although digital technologies have dramatically improved the efficiency of dental laboratory workflows, the quality of ceramic finishing and final surface characterization still depends largely on the craftsmanship of the dental technician. Even in the digital era, these analog skills remain critical in determining the final appearance and realism of a restoration.
The surface texture of natural teeth is highly individual, with each tooth exhibiting unique characteristics in gloss, texture intensity, and surface morphology. Furthermore, each of the three fundamental tooth forms possesses its own distinctive surface features. In this lecture, I will present the principles and “rules” that I use to observe and reproduce these characteristics, sharing practical insights that guide my daily clinical and laboratory work toward creating more lifelike restorations.

This journey has also been a continuing inquiry into what "beauty" truly means for each individual patient.
Over this period, dentistry has advanced remarkably in both technique and materials, and the means of expressing esthetics have expanded dramatically.
In this lecture, we will examine the long-term outcomes of treatments we performed in the past, and on that basis reconsider what choices we would make given today's knowledge. At the same time, we wish to reflect on the unchanging "essence" of treatment that endures even amid the changing times.

The outcome of anterior restorative treatment, whether involving a single tooth or multiple teeth, depends greatly on the clinician's and technician's ability to achieve highly esthetic results. Every aspect of the restoration should be based on a clear rationale; without such reasoning, the result is merely coincidental and cannot be reproduced consistently. In this lecture, I will present the clinical principles and thought processes that guide my daily approach to designing and fabricating anterior restorations, with a focus on achieving predictable and natural-looking esthetic outcomes.

The widespread adoption of CAD/CAM technology has made the fabrication of large implant-supported prostheses, such as bone-anchored bridges, considerably easier than in the analog era. As a result, prostheses incorporating artificial gingiva are now used more frequently, accompanied by increasing esthetic demands for gingival reproduction. Although techniques for reproducing gingival color have advanced substantially, successful outcomes depend not only on esthetics but also on appropriate anatomical design that facilitates long-term plaque control and maintenance. This lecture will discuss the principles of designing gingiva-colored prostheses, with particular emphasis on the relationship between anatomical morphology, cleanability, and esthetic integration.

In restorative and prosthetic treatment, it is difficult to achieve patient satisfaction and acceptance unless esthetic outcomes are sufficiently accomplished. Esthetics are influenced not only by crown morphology, but also significantly by the health, harmony, and natural appearance of the surrounding soft tissue.
In this presentation, functional esthetic prosthetic rehabilitation in harmony with the soft tissue will be discussed through material selection, treatment planning, implant-supported restorations, and pontic basal surface design.
