Root surface detection is an extension of the periodontal examination, and successful periodontal therapy depends on a systematic approach based on preoperative clinical information rather than blind instrumentation.
This lecture will demonstrate how to integrate the patient's chief complaint, radiographic findings, intraoral photographs, and knowledge of root anatomy to develop a mental image of the subgingival root surface before instrumentation begins.
The lecture will also cover accurate calculus detection using dedicated exploratory instruments to prevent unnecessary SRP, appropriate clinical decision-making during re-evaluation, and practical methods for improving root surface detection skills that can be immediately applied in daily clinical practice.

This lecture will organize the clinical decision-making process for selecting ultrasonic scalers or hand scalers based on comprehensive assessment using clinical observation, technical skills, communication, current guidelines, and EBM (EBD).
