Practical approaches using new oral‑development appliances will be introduced, supported by clinical case examples for everyday application.

Many children with malocclusion present with oral functional problems that adversely affect jaw development and dentofacial growth. Among these, tongue function is closely related to both breathing patterns and swallowing function, and improving tongue function may provide the key to improving multiple aspects of oral function. This lecture will explain, through clinical cases, how impaired tongue function contributes to the development of malocclusion and how improving tongue function can promote jaw growth and improve malocclusion.

One of the characteristics of oral functional developmental disorder is the persistence of infantile swallowing. Although MFT is currently the primary treatment approach, it is performed under conscious control and therefore has limitations in influencing the unconscious swallowing pattern. Infantile swallowing is characterized by hyperactivity of the anterior oral musculature, including the buccinator muscle. The appliance introduced in this lecture is designed to facilitate improvement of the swallowing pattern under unconscious conditions, and measurements at our clinic demonstrated a significant reduction in buccinator muscle pressure during swallowing.
